Bionic Commando is one of Capcom’s most memorable arcade action games from the late 1980s. Originally released in 1987 for arcades, the game quickly stood out thanks to its unique movement system. Instead of jumping like most platform games of the era, the player moves through each stage using a bionic grappling arm to swing across platforms, climb walls, and avoid enemies.
That mechanic alone made Bionic Commando very different from other arcade titles at the time, and it is still a defining feature today. The arcade version was followed by several home releases, including the well known Nintendo Entertainment System version released in 1988, which expanded the story and introduced the character Nathan Spencer.
In this video we revisit the original 1987 arcade experience and see just how demanding it still is today. Timing your swings, avoiding enemy fire, and navigating vertical stages require patience and precision. This is a true example of classic arcade design where every mistake matters.
