Rally-X started life in 1980 as a Namco arcade maze game, where players drive a blue car through a scrolling maze collecting yellow flags while avoiding red enemy cars trying to ram them. It reached North America through Midway Manufacturing in February 1981, and it's remembered as one of the first arcade games to feature multi directional scrolling, a bonus stage, and continuous background music.
The version we're playing in this video is a brand new 2026 ColecoVision homebrew port, built using CVBasic, a BASIC compiler for the ColecoVision created by developer nanochess. This particular build was developed with help from Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, and the project also includes support for the Super Game Module, an add on that expands the ColecoVision's memory and audio capabilities.
In the game itself, players guide their car around a maze, hunting down flags while dodging boulders and red chaser cars. If a chaser gets close, you can drop a smoke screen to stun it for a short time, though it won't stay down for long.
In this video we're playing through this new Rally-X build with full gameplay and commentary, running it on MiSTer FPGA.
